~ WALWORTH COUNTY FIRE / POLICE DISPATCH CENTER ~

COMMUNICATIONS DIVISION

The Walworth County Communications Center is responsible for the dispatching of Walworth County Sheriff’s Department units, many of the village and township units, as well as most of the fire and rescue units not located within the cities of Walworth County. Communications Officers at Walworth County answer a variety of calls. From the Enhanced 911 system, assistance can be sent even if the caller does not know their address, or is unable to speak. The main telephone lines also are answered by the Communications Center, requiring Communications Officers to be familiar with all divisions of the Sheriff’s Department. Many people depend on these officers for other information not always directly related to the Sheriff’s Department.

Mobile 9-1-1 callers continue to increase each year as more drivers carry these telephones with them. A number of reckless and intoxicated drivers were caught due to reports from cellular telephones. Citizens received assistance and service more quickly because of them calling in these situations. Emergency calls range from the simple cut finger to the person suffering from a heart attack. These calls, along with the radio communications from the police squads are given the highest priority. Patrolling squad cars call in driver’s license, registration and wanted person warrant checks. Responding to these types of radio calls is important as they can involve individuals who may pose a serious threat to a police officer’s safety.

The sixteen full-time Communications Officers are all well trained professionals committed to providing the best service possible to all who call in requesting service. Using Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Mobile Data Computers (MDC), State-linked radio systems, and in-house data systems, Communications Officers are able to provide quality service that is both efficient and effective in serving the citizens and guests of Walworth County.

Walworth County now has the capabilities to locate many of the cell 9-1-1 callers with mapping technologies. Although not as accurate as landline 9-1-1, this service has resulted in several "saves" of people who were injured and unable to provide their exact location.

In 2008, the Communications Division will incorporate several upgrades that will allow law enforcement vehicles to communicate through laptops in the squad cars more effectively. Mapping and Automatic Vehicle Location Systems will be brought on-line, increasing officer safety.
